Ionian Academy

The main venue for the Festival performances is the auditorium of the University, housed in the historic Ionian Academy building that dates in its present form from 1725. In the beginning it was a military barracks, the Grimani Barracks, and after 1824 became the home of the Ionian Academy, which was the first Greek university. Following the closure of the University, the building housed the Public Library.

On the 14th September, 1943, the Library was destroyed, burned down in a German bombing raid. It was rebuilt at the end of the 20th century in order to meet various school and university needs.

The auditorium of the Ionian Academy, with its excellent acoustics, has been designed to accommodate the performances organised by the Department of Music Studies of the Ionian University. It is fully air-conditioned and ergonomically designed so that each of the 350 members of the audience can follow performances in ideal conditions.

St. George's Church

A large basilica, in the style of an ancient Doric temple. Built around 1840 and was the official Anglican church during the British. Inside, the space originally divided into three aisles by two rows of iron columns, which supported a women's gallery, in the shape of a Greek Ð.

In 1864 the Orthodox church converted to a temple and added that from the church of St. Spyridon of Corfu town, with pictures of great value, some of which were attributed to Tzannes. The last ten years, the church offered to high-level cultural events.

Old Fort

Built by the Venetians upon the remains of a Byzantine castle and was completed in two phases. In the first period (1400-1500) the Venetians strengthened the Byzantine walls and the canal opened Contra-Fossa converting the promontory into artificial island accessed by a movable bridge. In modern history the Contra Fossa became notorious as the classic site of romantic suicides.

The second period (16th-18th cent.) began with the completion of this work (1546-1588) and ended with the additions and alterations made by the British. Today two impressive bastions which bear the names of the Italian engineers Martinengo and Savorgnan and later British buildings and additions, such as the church of St. George in the 1840, basilica with Doric columns. But they also destroyed several churches and buildings , most important amongst them the Palace of the Venetian Proveditore.
